It was a privilege to be invited to give the closing remarks at TEAM UP 2022, the tea sector’s major annual conference. The cost of tea is too low, and most of the profits are concentrated at the retail and brand end of the value chain. This leaves tea workers, who are mostly women, working in dire conditions on inadequate pay. While it is encouraging to see efforts to raise pay and standards across the sector, there a need to move further and faster to ensure a fairer deal for the workers who bring us the world’s favourite beverage.
