GUARDIAN: Food and energy billionaires $453bn richer than two years ago

As the world’s elite returned to Davos for the World Economic Forum, Oxfam’s new report warned that rising inequality could push 263 million more people into extreme poverty this year, reversing decades of progress. While skyrocketing food and energy prices create hardship for millions of people around the world, billionaires in these sectors have seen their fortunes rise by $453 billion in the last two years. I was quoted in The Guardian calling for governments to address gargantuan profits and wealth in order to ensure that no one is left behind. Greater taxation on wealth and windfall taxes on energy companies could raise funds for vital public services and social protection.
